Starting an A.W.A.K.E. Group

A.W.A.K.E. IS A NETWORK

Thank you for your interest in helping sleep apnea patients and their caregivers by starting an A.W.A.K.E. Group in your area.  Groups can be started by doctors or dentists, sleep technicians and sleep labs, hospitals and clinics, and patients volunteers- just to name a few. Here you will find all the information you need to get your group started.  If you have any questions, please email awake@sleepapnea.org.

Since 1990, the A.W.A.K.E. Network has helped enhance the lives of those with sleep apnea by providing educational resources, patient to patient support, and real life solutions. A.W.A.K.E. groups work by combating isolation, providing patients with information and a chance to digest it, and presenting opportunities to think out problems and ask questions. As you research starting a group, ask the following questions:

Is there a need?

Search our A.W.A.K.E. database or a list of A.W.A.K.E. groups already active in your area.  Contact one of the nearby coordinators or reach out to our Coordinator’s Council to learn about the dynamics of their group/area and what they are doing to foster a successful group.

Plan the logistics

Identify group coordinators who will take responsibility for the group’s success and administrative aspects. There will also need to be a contact person willing to correspond with the ASAA and directly with patients in the community.  Research potential sponsors (doctors, sleep dentists, home healthcare companies, etc) who can assist with providing speakers and assist with promoting your group to patients.  The annual fee for an A.W.A.K.E.
